Thirty years on the needle. Founded Gunpoint Tattoo in Kailua. Trained the artists who later opened 808 Tattoo. The senior hand on the TNT bench.
Shane Harvey has been tattooing on Oahu since 1995. That's three decades of needle work. In his own words: "You can catch me at TNT Tattoo. Walk-ins are always welcome. Feel free to call or text for a consultation." Three decades of watching ink heal, age, fade, blow out, hold tight, lose lines, gain character. Three decades of judgment about what to recommend, what to talk you out of, and what the shop apprentices need to learn next.
Around the year 2000 he founded Gunpoint Tattoo in Kailua and ran it for years. Several artists came up through his bench and went on to open their own shops — most notably Billy Whitney and Brian Takishita, who later founded 808 Tattoo on the windward side. Whitney still credits Shane publicly: "Shane gave me the freedom to develop my own style."
The artists Shane trained at Gunpoint went on to train the next generation. If you got a tattoo on the windward side in the last twenty years, you probably benefited from his teaching whether you knew it or not.
He works in black & grey, traditional, Hawaiian souvenir pieces, and custom — the four lanes a veteran tattooer keeps sharp. He's the artist to book when you want someone who's done the piece you're asking about a hundred times before, and who can tell you the one detail that'll make yours different.
Walk-ins welcome. Larger custom pieces start with a quick consultation. Text 808-486-4868 — or call. Shane still answers the phone.
Bring an idea. Shane will tell you how to make it work, what to drop from the design that won't read well on skin, and what to add that will hold up. Three decades of design judgment.
Smooth shading, dependable line weight, pieces that age cleanly. Memorial work, portraits, realism — all in restrained black-and-grey palette.
American Traditional — bold outlines, solid color fills, classic iconography. The style that built tattooing. Shane knows the rules cold and when to break them.
Maui souvenir, classic Hawaiian flash, surf-and-palm imagery, hibiscus, plumeria — the pieces tourists ask for, done right by someone who's been tattooing them on locals and visitors for thirty years.
Sleeves, back pieces, multi-session work. Shane is comfortable with the long haul. He plans sessions so you don't burn out and the piece comes together as one composition, not a patchwork.
The artist most likely to fit you in same-day at TNT. Small flash, simple custom, touch-ups, additions — Shane's bench is the walk-in bench when he's not in a longer session.
